Conference at The House of Science and Letters in Helsinki Oct 31 - Nov 1:
ETHICAL ASPECTS OF MENTAL HEALTH
The focus of this conference is on ethical questions regarding mental health seen from different perspectives. Many different factors may affect the mental health of an individual. Psychological and social circumstances for a person are of great importance, but the extent of this influence on the mental health varies according to the genetic composition of the person. Different kind of stress induction can cause a mental health disorder for a person. These disorders appear in all age groups and affect families, close relatives and working places. The diseases themselves cause individual suffering, and in addition, mental health problems still carry a certain stigma.
Target audience: Government officials, doctors, health care workers, patient groups, researchers, pharmaceutical companies, social workers, media, students

The Nordic Committee on Bioethics organised a conference in Reykjavik in August 2010 to hear expert views and discuss ethical issues relating to public health. The programme was divided into three sessions: 1) Individual Freedom and Public Health, 2) Health Responsibility and Life Style, and 3) Social Equality and Justice. The speakers offered a wide multidisciplinary perspective on these topics.

We present some of the viewpoints from the invited speakers at two of our conferences in 2009. The first was held on Genetic self-testing, and examined the development of genetic tests that are sold over the internet to consumers. The second conference was held on medical tourism. Both of these subjects touch upon a broader theme that we have called consumer medicine.
